Wings and Wheels Rally
Henham

May 2011

Our Youngest Marshals at the "Wings and Wheels" event....

We were ready for a relaxing weekend as we arrived at the Henham Estate on the Friday afternoon. It was another fine, warm spring day and we were thrilled to be looked after by two of the youngest rally marshals in the team. Charlie and Harry Goddard had been helping their mum, dad, grandma and grandad all afternoon. Even making good use of the equipment to ensure all the caravans were sited correctly.

A lovely quiet Saturday was followed by an exciting and busy Sunday looking round dozens of stalls, classic cars and commercial vehicles and seeing a good number of planes coming and going with a good overhead display too. We had a fantastic burger and chips from the food area and wandered around watching a strongman and high wire act, however Trev's favourite was the Honda Goldwing display (no you can't have one !)

We heard that some of the aircraft couldn't make it to Hehnam but the display was still well worth it.

Thanks to the Halesworth Lions for allowing our Centre to participate, to the landowner for permission to camp in this beautiful natural environment and most of all.... many thanks to our marshals Charlie & Harry, Colin & Jan, Alan & Sue and Nick & Carole and their all their helpers.

Sue Smith.

Jan and Colin would like to thank all members who supported the Wings and Wheels weekend.

Unfortunately, although we had amazing weather, the Lions organisers had no control over the weather in other parts of the country. Consequently many of the aircraft that were booked were unable to take off from their local airports. Those who did come were all from East Anglia.

Two display flights that had been booked were unable to attend:- the pilot of one of the Red Hawks had broken a leg on Friday and the Yak 52 had blown a piston (the organisers had no control over either of these events).

To compensate, the Mustang came at twenty-four hours notice as did the Twister Duo who came direct from an air display at Abingdon without having landed between displays. the Twister Duo were a fantastic finale in our opinion.
