This weekend had been keeping Ron Eldridge
awake at night.... This was the first
time that Ron and Sheila Eldridge had agreed
to run a rally as the main marshals and we
all know what a high standard the Suffolk
Centre marshals keep. So it was
understandable that the couple should worry
about all the usual things:
Will the rally be supported?
How will we set out the Rallyfield?
What will the price of the rally be?
Will everyone turn up?
Will the weather spoil the weekend?
Will everyone enjoy our rally?
And so the
list of questions and concerns went on....
It's hardly surprising that Ron was
apprehensive. However, our friends Karen &
Tony were there to help with many years of
experience as marshals. I am sure they
helped with the details too.
When we arrived, we were greeted by Ron and
Tony in the bitter cold wind. The East
Anglian winter this year has been unusually
dry. There has been the odd shower or two
but not enough to cause a problem. The
weekend continued dry but wow the wind was
bitter.
The
sunshine and bright blue sky was wonderful.
The fifteen or so caravans were neatly
positioned around the field behind the White
Horse Public House. There was one brave
awning and a windsock blowing about in the
wind.
We have recently heard folks
complaining that the prices of rallies has
gradually increased. Well, we found this
rally to be one of the best value weekends
for a while. Where else can you get two
nights in the beautiful Suffolk countryside
in close reach of nice walks around the
Alton Water, reservoir and meet and have fun
with your friends for just £11.50. This
included a £10 voucher for a meal in the Pub
too !! So the actual rally cost £1.50
for the entire weekend. And we still got a
rally plaque too.
I really must mention the
Pub. We had a pint of the local brew on
Saturday lunchtime. The main reason was to
book a table for the evening but it was too
much of a temptation. Upon opening the first
door, immediately we captured the atmosphere
of this wonderfully unspoilt Suffolk Pub.
The White Horse has been cared for and is
clean and tidy but keeps the old world feel
about it. The wood burner was roaring, the
wooden tables and chairs were neatly
arranged and the bar was just as you would
have expected 25 years ago. The locals were
chatting amongst the ralliers and it
resembled classic village pub ambiance.
Our meal on Saturday was
excellent. We even met with a few Centre
members that came over for the meal without
their caravan. It was a relaxing evening and
the service was warm and friendly.
Just to let Ron know, there was nothing for
him to worry about and we thoroughly enjoyed
the weekend. I do hope that we are able to
keep this new venue in our Rally Handbook in
years to come.
Well done and a big thank you to Ron,
Sheila, Tony & Karen.
