A Chance to Fish Rally
White House Beach CC Site
Kessingland

March 2007

A chance to get blown away.....

On our Thursday arrival, a day earlier than the crowd, we had beautiful sunshine and although the grass was very wet and soggy, the hardstands were perfect.

The day was taken up with a walk and some relaxation, whilst John went down to the beach to practice some casting. He was gone for some time and just made it back in time for a trip to "The Sailors Home", a pub right near the beach and just 500 yards from the site. We had a warm welcome and terrific meal. Colin found someone he knew from the past....  again...  and we all had a good "natter" over a couple of pints.

I had to do a night shift on Thursday night and we had some staff off sick. That meant that I left the caravan at about 9.30 pm and didn't return until 10.30am. But I did manage to get the SCCC signs out just in time for the start of the rally.

As expected, a large number of vans arrived at noon and the site wardens were booking them in as fast as we could site them. Again the weather was good, but a little more cloudy than the day before. No time for John to fish today though as he was kept very busy on the rally field.

Saturday was the day for the Fishing competition and six or more fishermen got brave and went down to the beach at noon. The weigh-in was planned for 6pm, so there was no time to loose.

I went to the beach at about 4pm and the weather was what you might call "SIDEWAYS" and it was as much as I could do to stand up straight.

The fishermen were braving it out though even though the lines were blowing back onto the beach. As you can see, the water was white and the sky was grey but the chaps were determined to get a bite.

Saturday evening we took cover inside our caravans for a while and then popped back to the pub for another warming glass of Abbott Ale. For medicinal purposes of course !

Again we were nattering away and the time seemed to pass more quickly than ever. Lots of ralliers had made their way down for dinner and there were waves and nods from across the restaurant. By the time we had finished our chat, it was gone 11pm and time for the short stroll back to the vans.

Just to prove what a delightful site White House Beach, Kessingland is, I managed to capture this picture on Thursday evening. There was another similar opportunity on Sunday but by this time, ralliers were already on their way home.

So what about the fishing competition?   John was very modest and he was the only fisherman to catch a small codling that he threw back. So at flagpole, our rally chairperson Anthea drew the winner from a hat. The trophies will be kept for another year and John is still keen to hold the fishing challenge again next year and perhaps we should invite the Norfolk Centre along too !

Now Diane has obviously got a good head for resolving problems. John had told me she works in IT....  that's a good clue. So when it came to the quiz this weekend, it was all "dingbats". For those of you that have not heard of them.... they are totally addictive puzzles that catch you out every time. Alan only lives up the road and he is a regular rallier. He dropped in for an afternoon cuppa and was hooked !  We didn't get another word out of him. I am sure he would have won the quiz if he came on the rally.

Here is a dingbat for you to try....

The answer is at the bottom of the page

This was the first time that Sue and I had run a rally with John and Diane. It was a really enjoyable weekend and we would like to thank them for their hard work and I really hope they will run the rally again next year. And if we pick a day that the wind is a little more calm, we may even catch a few fish.

Thanks to everyone, especially John & Diane for a great weekend.

Trev Smith.

Just for fun John....  here is a little joke...

The fish that got it's revenge !
